At Spetisbury we have been focusing on increasing the 'Wow-ness' of Science and engendering a love of scientific investigation where the children learn to think like scientists: and having formulated an aim, learn how to use fair testing to test their theory.

This year there has been a real wealth of scientific investigating carried out throughout both Key Stage 1 and 2, where the children have been using the 'Investigation Lab' planning sheets to plan their aim, equipment and method, then record their results and come up with conclusions. 

The children have then used the 'Bobby Dazzler' activity opportunities to share and celebrate facts they've learned throughout the various topics.

By the time the children reach Year 6 we hope that they have developed the confidence and expertise needed to really think about the world around them and consider how science impacts on their every day lives.

The photos above show how, at the end of Key Stage 2, the children can plan and investigate science with a real enjoyment.

Working Scientifically in Owls has been the focus this week. The children have been investigation the permanence of chemical changes by looking at cooking eggs and burning toast to produce Carbon. We have also been learning about the process of corrosion: when iron is exposed to water and oxygen, producing hydrated iron oxide, or rust. The children were asked to work collaboratively to plan an investigation on corrosion, considering their variables and how to ensure a fair test was carried out.

This term has already seen a great variety of Science going on in each class at Spetisbury. The photos above show just a small selection of the lovely work produced.

In Rabbits the children have been learning about the seasons and explaining the difference between them all. They have been gathering and recording data to help answer questions and describing how the length of each day changes with the seasons.

The Hedgehogs have been learning about materials and considering their suitability for particular uses. They have also been looking at living things in their habitats and considering basic needs of different kinds of plants and animals.

In Key Stage 2, the Owls and Foxes have been looking at materials and their properties, understanding and investigating solids, liquids and gases and beginning to investigate reversible and irreversible changes. Meanwhile the Badgers have been learning all about magnets and forces. They have been investigating the types of force and their effects as well as how they are measured. They have investigated magnets and magnetism and how they can attract and repel each other depending on the position of the magnetic poles.

At Spetisbury we believe that Scientific Investigation is a crucial part of learning. Each time a new topic is taught, at least one scientific experiment is planned on the 'Investigation Lab' planning frame. 

The 'Investigation Lab' planning frame is designed to show progression in terms of the vocabulary used and the scientific concepts the children need to understand, such as the concept of variables and fair testing.

What a Bobby Dazzler!

Children are given opportunities to demonstrate their learning through the use of 'Mind Maps' and our 'Bobby Dazzler' game. The mind maps are used at the beginning of each topic for the child to demonstrate any prior knowledge and are added to in different colours at various stages on the learning journey. The 'Bobby Dazzler' game allows children to share their learning with their classmates by buying facts for team points. The fact that is chosen to be the Bobby Dazzler wins the child bonus team points.

Home learning is a wonderful opportunity to allow for real 'Depth of Learning'. For this task, children were given the challenge of designing an imaginary creature using their knowledge of adaptation and evolution. The children were very creative and the creatures ranged from: caterpillars made out of biscuits; a soap carved creature; and a sea creature made from a mop head. Each imaginary creature had a written description detailing any special adaptations to the environment.
